SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES IN ASTORIA, OREGON

ONE STORY AT A TIME, DURING THE PANDEMIC OF 2020.

In a time when the world is collectively experiencing the same thing, it’s hard to hear each individual story. The purpose of this project is to share the story of individual business owners in downtown Astoria during the shutdown caused by the pandemic. The lights may be off; we may have locked doors and closed signs; however, there are still ways to help us during this time. We can do this together.

Kirsten opened Kit’s Apothecary in 2017.  She was making products for herself and her family at first, and then expanded into helping her community and now people all over the country to better their health. It’s a dream come true for her.  She calls it her accidental apothecary.

After winning the reader’s choice award for the Best Gift shop in Astoria, she realized with the popularity of the store she would need to close the doors to the public and protect her most vulnerable customers.   She has moved everything to her home and is shipping orders from there.  She is uncertain what it will look like when she opens again.

Kirsten is fearful for her friends who are not able to work right now. She reminds us to check on our friends. Do they need a cheek in massage?  Do they need groceries?  She hopes that all her friends know they can come to her for anything at any time.  But sometimes she will remind you of this.  If you need anything at all, please reach out to her.

Kirsten finds joy in watching her friends in business pivot, adapt, and get creative, and not give up! She is applauding everyone’s efforts right now.  Having the ability to support small local businesses right now is a huge priority of hers.

Kristen would like to remind us to be a helper.

“ Like Mr. Rogers said..”  “ Look for the helpers.”  “Well, I say BE A HELPER.  Help your neighbor, help your friend.  Help in any way you can.”

Kirsten Norgaard.
